Alvaro Mendoza was born in Havana, Cuba in October 1954. One of five brother and sisters, his family was forced into exile in 1959 and settled in Palm Beach, Florida.

Alvaro attended the University of Florida and received a Bachelors degree in Business Administration with Honors in 1976. He went on to receive a Masters Degree in Communications with a minor in Marketing with High Honors in 1978.

After a brief sales and marketing career with the Miami Herald, Alvaro joined his Brother, Francisco in 1980 to form a Residential/Commercial Solar Contracting business based in Stuart. Tropical Solar Systems, Inc. grew to 22 employees and was recognized as one of the top solar companies in the industry.

In 1983, Francisco and Alvaro formed Commercial Energy Specialists (CES) in Jupiter in order to expand into other energy-related contracting services including pool heating, pool covers, pool circulation and filtration systems, chemical controllers and chemical treatment systems.

CES is recognized as one of the leading aquatic suppliers in the industry. After Francisco's death in 2002, Alvaro and a team of water quality veterans have continued to grow and refine CES's core competency of supporting commercial and municipal aquatic operations with quality pool products backed with on-site service and technical support. CES's trademarked Service Supported Distribution SSD® provides wholesalers, pool contractors, service companies, renovation experts, and others with competitive mechanical equipment pricing backed by factory service center technical support and on-site warranty administration.

Alvaro has been a board member of the Florida Solar Energy Industry Association, United Pool and Spa Association (UPSA) and Products Advisory Council for several major aquatic supply corporations. He served as the Secretary of the International Recreational Water Professionals (IRWP) and was the Swimming Pool Editor of the Florida Community Association Journal (FCAJ) and contributes articles to FCAJ, United States Swim School Association (USSSA), Florida Spa & Pool Association (FSPA) and CESWaterQualityNews. He was elected Vice-President of the UPSA organization in 2009 and served as the chairman of the Educational Committee. Alvaro is a long-time Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) and AquaTech instructor having taught over 50 courses since 1995, and he has been a lecturer in many FRPA, FSPA, USSSA, Building Manager Associations and industry conferences since 1983.
